Professor Karri Wichmann

It is with much sadness that we report the death of Professor Dr. Karri Wichmann, Finland, on 10 July at the great age of 93. Karri was the Europe Representative on our Anti Doping and Medical Committee from 1997-2009, whilst also continuing to deal with Therapeutic Use Exemption Certificates (TUEs) for European Masters Athletics and advising the Council on Medical matters.  He was awarded a WMA Pin for his loyal services to our sport.

Behind the excitement and pressures of competing, many athletes were unaware that he was working tirelessly to ensure that their competition was fair. He gave his professional advice free to Officials and athletes. European Masters Athletics award the Torsten Carlius Fair Play Trophy to whomever they feel has demonstrated fair play in the sport of Masters athletics. Karri was a very deserving and popular winner in 2006/7/8 and 2009.

He was also a competitor. One of his last competitions was at our Indoor in 2008 in Clermont-Ferrand in 2008 where as an M80 he won the Pentathlon with 3340pts.

Masters athletes all over the world offer their condolence to his family.
