WMA sanctioning (authorisation) of International Masters Athletics Competitions WMA, with the full backing of IAAF, holds to the rights to formal sanctioning of International Masters Athletics Competitions. Therefore, International Masters
Athletics Competitions may not be staged in the Affiliate’s country unless the competition, whether as a stand-alone event or as a component of a multisport event, has been sanctioned by the Affiliate and referred to and sanctioned by WMA.
WMA herewith reminds its Affiliates of the relevant clause in the WMA Constitution, being in paragraph 2 of our PURPOSES:
- 2 (b) to sanction World Masters Athletic Championships and other International Masters Athletics Competitions
This, henceforth, is to be interpreted as:
- WMA alone shall have the right to sanction World or Regional Masters Athletics Championships, and
- WMA alone shall sanction other international masters athletics games, matches and meetings with five or more countries.
- WMA will not sanction an event if it is not supported by the Affiliate or its controlling sports bodies. If, in the opinion of WMA, the Affiliate unreasonably withholds its consent to any event mentioned in 1 and 2 above then WMA shall have the right to override the wishes of the Affiliate
Consequently a WMA Affiliate may not support an International Masters Athletics Competition of the above character to be staged in the Affiliate’s country unless the competition has been sanctioned by WMA. If a WMA
Affiliate becomes aware of an International Masters Athletics Competition of this kind to be held in its country it must immediately inform the WMA Secretary stating its support for or objection to the event together with supporting motivation if it does not wish to sanction the event.
Please note that the term “athletics” here also includes cross-country, road running and race-walking.
